The Smoky Mouse is a native Australian rodent endemic to the south east Australian mainland. Once widespread throughout this region, populations of this species have dwindled in recent years and they are now classified as Endangered due to habitat loss and modification as well as increased predation from introduced predators such as foxes and cats.

The recovery plan for the Smoky Mouse is underway with the genetics of the genus Pseudomys currently being investigated whilst field monitoring surveys are in progress.

Saving the Smoky Mouse

Zoos Victoria is committed to securing a future for the Smoky Mouse. We are currently assisting the research into genetic differences between populations and are developing strategies to maintain a viable captive population.
