Camel calf born on display

A camel was born on display at Werribee Open Range Zoo on Saturday 25 August, delighting visitors on the Safari Bus Tours.

Mum Lucie gave birth to her calf about 1.20pm in the Arid exhibit in the zoo's Upper Savannah, as many visitors watched on in amazement from the buses.

Keepers have since named the calf "Aloe", after the Aloe Vera plants in the exhibit which the camels are particularly fond of.

Mum Lucie and her herd mates are taking good care of their new charge, and Aloe is thriving.

Eleven baby camels have been born at the zoo since it was opened 29 years ago - the last calf (Amy) was born in August last year.

You can visit Aloe and many other amazing animals such as rhino, giraffe, zebra and antelope on the zoo's safari bus tours, included in general admission price.
