Melbourne Zoo Keepers are busier than ever on hot days, constantly checking on all the animals to make sure they are comfortable.

Keepers have come up with some very ingenious ways of keeping animals cool in the heat, including chilled or frozen fruit and iceblocks full of treats.

Each species of course has its own food preferences, so the treats are prepared accordingly!

Bears are omnivores, eating a wide variety of food, while carnivores like lions only like meat.

This morning Syrian Brown Bear Honey enjoyed a mammoth three-layered ice block, which had a fish course, a meat course, and a fruit and vegetable course, all frozen in distinct layers.

Carnivore Keepers prepared that over three days, freezing it a layer at a time.

They also prepared something special for the three African Lion brothers, a large ice block flavoured with blood.

In other parts of the Zoo, animals were cooling off under misters, in their pools, or even in their cool night dens.

All exhibits have plenty of shade and cool fresh water, which pets at home also need on these hot days.
