A Prickly Customer

8 May 2014

In this special Mother’s Day edition of our animal profiles, we take a look at Prickles, our 6-year old Koala mum from Healesville Sanctuary.

Prickles originally came to the Sanctuary as an orphan, found at the bottom of a tree and needing to be hand-raised by some of the volunteers at the Sanctuary.

As her name suggest, Prickles has a bit of a prickly personality and she has been known to have the odd mood swing on occasion, a trait that has been consistent ever since she first arrived at the Sanctuary. It’s nothing our Keepers can’t manage with a bit of her favourite Cider Gum, or as our keepers like to refer to it as ‘chocolate gum’.

Despite her personality, Prickles is a wonderful mum! She has had two boys; Dindi in 2012 and Steve in 2013 and while Steve has become a big boy now, he still insists on climbing on mum’s back to get around.

Koalas are doing quite well in Victoria and are not currently threatened.
