Hollywood comes to Healesville Sanctuary

20 March 2013

Healesville Sanctuary will be the setting for a major new Australian feature film this Thursday and Friday (21 and 22 March 2013).

And 700 lucky Zoos Victoria members and guests will be part of the unique event, participating as extras in the film, HEALING.

Starring alongside Healesville Sanctuary’s own talented staff and raptors will be internationally recognised Australian actor Hugo Weaving (The Hobbit, The Matrix, Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert) and leading Australian actors Don Hany (Offspring, East West 101) and Jane Menelaus (The Dish, Kath'n'Kim, Quills), who has spent many hours with the Sanctuary's Spirits of the Sky team learning about the raptors which will feature in the film.

HEALING is the latest film from the AFI Award winning director of The Interview, Craig Monahan, and is inspired by the Sanctuary's long running raptor rehabilitation program run in partnership with Justice Victoria. HEALING, a tale of redemption and the discovery of hope, centres on real-life prison inmate Viktor Khadem’s (Hany) last 18 months before release after serving a 16-year term. Khadem is sent to Won Wron, a low-security, pre-release prison farm, where Senior Officer Matt Perry (Weaving) has established a unique program to rehabilitate broken men by giving them the responsibility for the rehabilitation of injured  birds of prey. Special note to zoo visitors: some walking paths will be filmed on Thursday morning and the Australian Wildlife Health Centre will feature in the afternoon so will be closed to visitors. There will be no presentations (Spirits of the Sky presentations and Fearsome to Awesome reptile show) in the Flight Arena on Friday.
