Health and Safety
Zoos Victoria operates under a range of unique areas and on a daily basis employees use a broad range of equipment, tools and machinery. We also make it our mantra to provide a fun, happy and safe place for all staff, visitors, contractors and volunteers across the three zoos.
We constantly strive to improve the way we care for our animals, improve visitor facilities and improve workplace culture and safety performance.
Caring for our people, visitors and animals is fundamentally important to our organisation. There is no project or deadline that justifies risking lives or injury and understanding the unique operations and needs of each business area is vital to operating in a safe environment.
Our Health and Safety Commitment goes across all parts of the business, including:
Safe work environment
Promoting safe work practices, managing Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) risks, ensuring appropriate provision of training and development to enable staff to work safely as well as an overall commitment to provide a safe environment for all staff, visitors, contractors and volunteers.
Health and wellbeing
Zoos Victoria provides important information about staying active, seeking counselling or advice as well as access to workshops on how to deal with stress and mental illness in the workplace. Zoos Victoria also offers discounted physio and muscle therapy services to all staff.
Our goal is to avoid all work related injuries but if you are injured at work, we will assist you in returning to work in a safe and timely manner.
The Zoo environment is extremely complex and all staff need to know what to do in an emergency. From wardens, first aid officers and firearms response personnel; all staff are appropriately trained for a range of emergency situations with staff and visitor safety of upmost importance.
Accident and hazard reporting
Zoos Victoria regularly reports on all workplace accidents, injuries, near misses or hazards in order to make adjustments and improvements to the workplace.
OH&S Management and compliance
Working safely is a condition of employment and we observe all health and safety workplace laws, regulations and statutory obligations as well as comply with the health and safety policy.
