Learning Outcomes

Science Understanding

  • Living things have a variety of external features and live in different places where their basic needs, including food, water and shelter, are met (VCSSU042)
    Through educator-led discussions, an animal encounter and play-based learning students are able to explore animal features, habitats and survival needs
  • Living things grow, change and have offspring similar to themselves (VCSSU043)
    Students will explore animal lifecycles and the characteristics of living and non-living things through educator-led discussions, an animal encounter and unique zoo-based resources

Science Enquiry Skills

  • Participate in guided investigations, including making observations using the senses, to explore and answer questions (VCSIS051)
    Students will be encouraged to engage their senses: listening, observing, smelling and when appropriate touching animals or animal artefacts in order to explore living and non-living things, this will be supported through storytelling, educator-led discussions, an animal encounter and guided outdoor investigations

Ethical Capability

  • Explore the types of acts considered right and those often considered wrong and the reasons why they are considered so (VCECD002)
    An animal encounter is used as a provocation for students to understand the experience from the viewpoint of the animal, to recognise animal sentience, to encourage emotional connection with animals, and to promote respect for animals and their habitats

Program Description

Children will become a Wild Explorer for the day, learning about what makes nature special, meeting animals (and dinosaurs) along the way.

Our Wild Explorers meet dinosaurs and learn to love and care for animals in this fun-filled and educational day out at the zoo. Students engage all their senses and exercise their enquiring minds to learn what makes animals special and uncover animals’ unique characteristics, habitats and what they need to survive.

Have the chance to meet an animal up close, have hands-on experiences with animal artefacts, visit the dinosaur park and explore the zoo to discover what makes our animals so special. Guided discussions, animal encounters and inquiry learning help students understand where these animals live, what they eat and how we can care for them and their habitats.

By the end of their mission into the wild, students will understand how to care for animals, the environment and contribute to a sustainable future.

Wild Explorers will learn:

  • How to love and care for animals
  • The unique characteristics and needs of various animal species
  • Sustainability and conservation issues
  • About dinosaurs and discover why these now extinct animals are a source of continued fascination (only available during term 2, 2019)

What to bring

Wild Explorers is an outdoor all-weather program; the students will need appropriate clothing for weather conditions. This could include a raincoat, hat and sun protection.

Student ratio

1 adult for every 5 children are admitted for free with this program. Additional adults are welcome to join for a reduced rate.

Plan your visit

School groups will enter via Rail Gate. The organising teacher must present their booking confirmation to Admission staff prior to students and remaining teachers entering the Zoo. More information
