Brad Pitta the bachelour Pitta bird!
Brad the Noisy Pitta has been joined by a bachelor flock of Fig Parrots at Healesville Sanctuary, creating a social new group that’s already thriving together. Visitors can spot this unlikely “wingman” arrangement along Woodland Tracks, where the ground-loving Brad and tree-dwelling parrots are settling in, making plenty of noise and personality along the way.

Eaglet returns for nestflicks & chill
After falling from its nest in Doreen and fracturing its wing, this rescue eaglet has finally returned home. Carers, volunteers, an arborist, a farmer and a team of veterinary experts from Healesville Sanctuary all came together to make this epic rescue, rehab and release mission possible.

Our two lion cubs now have roarsome names!
Werribee Open Range Zoo’s 10-week-old lion cub duo has officially been named, marking the next chapter for the growing pride of eight lions. The female cub is called Sukari, meaning ‘sugar’, which was chosen to complement her mum Asali’s name, which means ‘sweet like honey’. Her brother’s name is Kwame [pronounced: Kwah-may], which means ‘born on a Saturday’ and fittingly he was born on Valentine's Day!

Who's joey is more adorable? Swamp Wallaby or Red Kangaroo?
There are a number of joeys in pouches at Healesville Sanctuary at the moment, including the first Swamp Wallaby joey for eight years and a Red Kangaroo joey. Both are just poking their heads out at this stage. Join keeper Taylah as she rings the breakfast bell for all the wallabies.

Our Snow Leopard Cubs names are....🥁🥁🥁
Melbourne Zoo’s four snow leopard cubs - the only snow leopard cubs in the whole of Australia – are described as “feisty”, “energetic” and at least one of them is “quite snoozy”. Now the tiny, three kilogram balls of soft fur have names – and they’re out on habitat.
The four cubs, two girls and two boys, are named Maya, Kira, Lumi and Sabu as voted for by Zoos Victoria members. "The names were inspired by the range countries where snow leopards are found, a wide variety of locations around the Himalayas,” says Keeper Laura.

Miska's four cubs have ventured outside for the first time and wasted no time exploring and playing in their large habitat at Melbourne Zoo. They confidently leaped onto habitat, running, tackling each other and curiously checking out their new home.

Lion Cubs for Asali at Werribee Open Range Zoo
Asali has recently given birth to two healthy cubs. Mum and the cubs are staying in the den for now but will be venturing outside to meet the rest of the pride in a few weeks time.

Drone delivery for Orangutans
Malu is a guy who knows his own mind. And for this shaggy 125kg orangutan, if he’s going to climb a 12-metre tower, he needs a good reason to do so. Melbourne Zoo keepers, aided by Zoos Victoria donors, have started using a drone to drop payloads of food high on the elevated platforms of the orangutan habitat which are very hard for keepers to access in other ways. The hope was that flying packages of nuts, seeds and veggies – carefully wrapped up by volunteers into tricky to undo packages - up onto tall platforms, would encourage Malu and Gabby to hoist themselves up the tower for a snack. And it worked!

Thanks to dedicated keepers, every animal at the Sanctuary is trained to take part in their own healthcare — including stepping onto the scales. So… will it be a wombat?A kangaroo?Or maybe even a cockatoo? With more than 130 species and 1,500 animals, let’s settle it once and for all.

Three of Zoos Victoria’s Asian elephants are expecting! Num-Oi, Dokkoon and Mali are all pregnant, with calves due around April 2027. Get ready for the pitter patter of not-so-little feet!
Just one year after the herd made their incredible journey from Melbourne Zoo to their expansive new home at Werribee Open Range Zoo, we’re celebrating an exciting milestone, not only for Zoos Victoria and our members, but for Asian elephant conservation.
The purpose-built Elephant Trail gives the nine-member herd the space, choice and complexity they need to truly thrive. With room to roam, forage, play and strengthen social bonds, it’s the perfect place to welcome the next generation.
We can’t wait to share this next chapter with you.

Watching animals = important science!

The rarest croc in the world
Say hello to Pangalawa, or Pangi for short, Melbourne Zoo’s newest resident and a very special arrival. This 12-year-old Philippine crocodile has travelled all the way from Cologne Zoo in Germany to her new home, after five years of careful planning by our keeper teams.
Although she’s one of the smaller crocodile species, Pangi is still every bit a croc, strong bite included! Over the next few years, keepers hope she’ll grow big enough to meet Melbourne Zoo’s other Philippine crocodile, Luzon, with the long-term goal of supporting the conservation of this incredible species.
Pangi is an important ambassador for her species. Philippine crocodiles are the most critically endangered crocodiles in the world, with fewer than 200 left in the wild. Zoos Victoria is proud to work alongside the Mabuwaya Foundation to help protect this species. Together, we’ve been supporting conservation efforts in north-east Luzon in the Philippines since 2000, helping to monitor crocodiles, protect habitats, work with local communities and support breeding and release programs. Thanks to this long-term partnership Philippine crocodile numbers in the region are slowly increasing.

"Scrumptious little noodle" Melbourne Zoo’s giraffe calf has a name!
In just a few short weeks, Melbourne Zoo’s giraffe calf has gone from wobbly newcomer to star attraction — the first born at the Zoo in nearly 20 years. Members and visitors have watched him snuggle up to mum Nakuru, discover his legs with some spectacular zoomies, and grow bigger every day, stacking on 25 kilos in three weeks he now tips the scales at more than 100 kilograms. But every giraffe needs a name, so the vote was put to Zoos Victoria members. The three choices were: Tambi, meaning “noodle” in Swahili, Tamu meaning “sweet” and Enzi meaning “power” or “might”.
The winning name is Tambi [pronounced: Tum-bee] winning 48% of the votes!

Giant Tortoises on the move!
Each morning, our reptile keepers bring our 6-year-old Aldabra giant tortoise out of the Reptile House and wheel them in a buggy to their outdoor habitat, where they can soak up some sunshine and enjoy the fresh air.

MEMBER EXCLUSIVE: Wombats Gem and Milo have a dental checkup
Wombats Gem and Milo at Healesville Sanctuary celebrated Wombat Day with a trip to the dentist! The pair received specialist dental check-ups to keep their ever-growing teeth healthy, supported by a diet of fibrous food to help wear them down naturally. Thanks to calm training, they voluntarily entered crates for the procedure, which was even streamed live for visitors to watch. Both made a speedy recovery, a perfect reason to smile this Wombat Day!

Nine year old male Snow Leopard Kang-Ju enjoys smelling and rolling in spices. As well as masking his natural smell the spice also stimulates an interesting physical response – one that you may see your household cat doing. He curls his lips and bares his teeth in what looks like a mischievous grin. This is known as the Flehman response.
