Members Vote: Snow Leopard Cubs

Help us name Melbourne Zoo's newest Snow Leopard cubs!

Zoos Victoria members, we need your help!

Melbourne Zoo has welcomed four adorable Snow Leopard cubs, born to mum Miska and dad Kang Ju, the first Snow Leopard births at the zoo since 2020. These little cubs need a name, and we want you to help choose it.

Our keepers have shortlisted some beautiful names, and now it’s time for members to help decide. Choose your favourite female name and male name — the most popular picks will become the cubs’ names.

The finalists are...

Female names:

Zaya: Tibetan for thriving/ flourishing

Kira: Nepali for insect (butterfly)

Nima: Tibetan for sun or day

Maya: Nepali for love or compassion

Male names:

Sabu: Tibetan word for snow leopard

Rajan: Sanskrit name "King"

Alu: Nepali word for potato

Lumi: Inspired by the Nepali word for snow, and also associated with light or brightness.

For now, the little family is enjoying some quiet bonding time behind the scenes and will make their public debut in April once they’re ready to explore safely.
