Creatures of the Night
This winter, discover the secret life of some of the world’s most fascinating nocturnal creatures.
For the very first time, you will be able to explore our exciting new Bandicoot Hideout exhibit, and get up close to the critically endangered Eastern Barred Bandicoot. Be one of the first to view this special nocturnal native which is now extinct in the wild of mainland Australia and learn what Zoos Victoria is doing to save them.
The Bandicoot Hideout is also home to other amazing Australian night-time creatures including Squirrel Gliders, Fat-tailed Dunnarts, Growling Grass Frogs, the Tawny Frog Mouth and the Striped Legless Lizard.
What do the Zoo’s animals get up to under the cover of darkness? Special Keeper Talks will shed light on the after-dark activities of these secretive natives and, of course, the Zoo’s African animals.
Along the Zoo’s walking trails, visitors will also be able to see never-before-seen footage captured by Keepers ‘undercover’ night vision cameras. From a curious giraffe to cheeky zebras searching for snacks, you’ll be surprised by what the animals get up to!
After hitting the trails make sure you stop by the cosy retreat of Ranger Kids. This indoor play space provides the opportunity for children to become a wildlife ranger, a medic, an African villager or a Leopard Tortoise with fun props and dress-up opportunities. This winter is no time to hibernate!
And remember, kids are free every weekend, Victorian Government school holidays and public holidays!
