Come Yarn With Me is a relaxed, hands-on cultural activation that invites visitors to gather, create, and connect through shared making practices.

Taking place on 30 May 2026 as part of National Reconciliation Week, this free drop-in experience offers a series of scheduled sessions throughout the day, available on a first come, first served basis.

Visitors can take part in traditional weaving sessions led by a Bunurong community member, alongside beginners knitting workshops facilitated by a local teacher from Geelong. Sessions are designed to be short and accessible, welcoming participants of all skill levels—no prior experience is needed.

You’re also invited to bring along your own craft project and settle in, enjoying the shared experience of making in a welcoming, communal space.

At its heart, Come Yarn With Me centres on creativity, connection, and cultural exchange in a relaxed, low-pressure environment. Rather than a formal class or structured discussion, it offers an inclusive setting to sit together, learn through doing, and connect in a natural, unhurried way.

Meet your facilitators

Our weaving facilitator is Joanne Nicholson, a Bunurong community member and Elder, deeply committed to culture and family. Joanne is a highly skilled traditional weaver who carries and shares cultural knowledge through her practice.

Our knitting facilitator is Tess Vandekolk of Fluff & Nonsense,  a Geelong based Australian knitting pattern designer, yarn dyer, and educator known in the knitting community for her beginner friendly workshops.
