Hang out with the Hippos
Hang out with the Hippos these school holidays at Werribee Open Range Zoo!
Head to Hippo Beach for fun in the sand, water play and the opportunity to see these amazing animals up close with a new daily Keeper presentation.
Each day at 1.10pm, Keepers will provide a fascinating insight into the behaviours, care and unique personalities of the hippo group.
Beginning with a health check, where Keepers can take a good look at each hippo’s teeth, tusks and gums, this special presentation also includes a feed on the beach, with hippos emerging almost soundlessly from the water to forage on the banks.
Hippos have a reputation as one of the most dangerous animals in Africa due to their territorial nature, yet these massive herbivores can also be shy, gentle and playful.
Able to hold their breath for up to five minutes and create their own sweat-based sunscreen, they also have some remarkable adaptations that make them unique in the animal kingdom!
Sadly the species is also under threat in the wild as a result of habitat loss and poaching for their tusks.
These school holidays, hang out with the hippos, meet their Keepers and enjoy the full African Safari experience, spotting Rhinos, Lions, Zebra, Giraffe and Meerkats at Werribee Open Range Zoo.
Included with General Admission. Kids under 16 visit free during Victorian School Holidays.
