Investigate how animal adaptations and survival pressures drive evolution in real-world ecosystems.

This Level 9-10 Science and Geography program explores evolution through natural selection by examining how variation, adaptation and selection pressures can lead to biodiversity and the emergence of new species. Through close observation of living animals and analysis of skulls, students will investigate structural adaptations related to survival, including food acquisition and predator avoidance, and consider the consequences of species loss within ecosystems.

Students will learn
  • Scientific methods used to investigate evolutionary processes
  • How natural selection shapes animal adaptations over time
  • How selection pressures contribute to biodiversity
  • How to observe animals and identify factors influencing specific adaptations
  • The impacts of evolution and human activity on ecosystems
Support for teachers
