Healesville Sanctuary

Cool Conservation

Share our conservation work at Fighting Extinction HQ

Healesville Sanctuary has a long and proud history of conservation work and breeding threatened species. In the past the majority of this critical work has happened ‘out the back', out of the view of our visitors. Cool Conservation brings our Fighting Extinction work out into the Sanctuary, allowing visitors to meet some of our most endangered local species, and to learn about some of their stories which have never been shared before.

Saving the Mountain Pygmy-possum and Southern Corroboree Frog

This exciting and engaging new space gives visitors the chance to see the breeding programs in action for two of our threatened alpine species; the Mountain Pygmy-possum and Southern Corroboree Frog. These breeding facilities are all on display, allowing visitors to see the real work happening to save these species from extinction, and to watch our expert keepers in action. The alpine home of these wonderful and unique little animals is also brought to life with stunning images, soundscape, and video stories about our work in the field. Test out your frog finding skills with the pop up Southern Corroboree Frog enclosure which allows a unique viewpoint of these stunning little frogs, or search for the shy Mountain Pygmy-possums among the rocks. Learn about how amazing these animals are and what you can do to help save them from extinction!

Saving the Helmeted Honeyeater and Orange-bellied Parrot

To find this alpine conservation space you need to wander through an aviary with two of Australia's most critically endangered bird species – the Helmeted Honeyeater and Orange-bellied Parrot! And if you catch the 11am Keeper Talk you can see them right up close as they fly down for a nectar treat!

And just out front of this aviary is our Fighting Extinction HQ where there are more keeper stories and interactive fun. Kids can get their secret mission from Zooperman and join our Extinction Fighting team!
