A nine-metre long whale is spending the weekend at Melbourne Zoo.

Neither the seals nor the elephants are keen on sharing their pools, and the otter pool is far too small, so the whale will be beached on a lawn near the Reptile House!

Keepers are especially excited because this species is rarely bred in zoos. They give birth to live young, rather than lay eggs.

Giant Tortoise Wilbur arrived at Melbourne Zoo 53 years ago today, and Keepers celebrated that history with a special treat.

They prepared a ‘cake’ with a Lucerne base decorated with the year of his arrival, 1965, marked out with slices of rockmelon.

Vaccinations vital

Four young Meerkats have been given some vitally important vaccinations today.

Carnivore Keepers were able to collect the active youngsters so the Zoo’s Head Veterinarian Dr. Michael Lynch could vaccinate them against two potentially fatal diseases.
