What's new

22 September 2023 – WORLD GORILLA DAY

World Gorilla Day is all about celebrating and appreciating these magnificent animals, as well as doing something to help them in the wild.

Did you know that every old mobile phone or tablet that is recycled through They’re Calling On You raises funds for the Gorilla Doctors to purchase equipment, medications and resources to continue their work, which is crucial when the health of every gorilla matters.

Click here to find more information on how to get involved, or bring your old mobile phones for recycling in on your next zoo visit. And if you’re at Melbourne Zoo or Werribee Open Range Zoo, be sure to make a stop at the gorillas!

22 September 2023 – WE NEED YOUR HELP!

During the spring school holidays, Melbourne Zoo and Werribee Open Range Zoo are welcoming kids to join colouring activities and learn about the Endangered Bogong Moths, which is currently migrating across the country towards the alpine regions. We look forward to colouring with you soon!

If you spot a real-life Bogong Moth, you can help this important species by logging your sightings on Moth Tracker.

22 September 2023 – POOKILA BREEDING SUCCESS UPDATE

The first ever Pookila genetic rescue release was a success in September.

Six captive-born females with mixed genetic heritage were released into wild populations at Wilsons Prom National Park, the first step in improving genetic health of the critically important population. We’re continuing to monitor their progress in the wild and how they’re integrating with the locals. For more information, check out the video below.

11 september 2023 – Spring has sprung

Spring is in full swing, and now is the perfect time to visit Melbourne Zoo’s spectacular Japanese Gardens.

The garden includes a traditional tea house, waterfall, stone bridges and an ornamental lake to form a major feature of the garden, set amongst extensive plantings representative of the gardens of Japan.

You do not want to miss seeing these gardens at their finest, visit Melbourne Zoo to see it for yourself.

21 August 2023 – Vale Man Jai

It is with great sadness that we inform our valued members of the passing of much-loved Asian Elephant, Man Jai.

Man Jai was incredibly loved by his keepers, herd and, in particular, his sidekick and friend, the herd's older male, Luk Chai. We will fondly remember their special bond, splashing in the pool and sliding down mud mounds together.

Visit our Facebook page for some touching tributes and memories of our beloved Man Jai.
