Dragons may seem like the stuff of legends, but at Melbourne Zoo that’s not always the case.

Zoos Victoria is committed to fighting wildlife extinction and for several species, our long-term commitment is their only hope of survival. One of the 27 species that we’re fighting for is the Victorian Grassland Earless Dragon, a tiny and energetic creature that was rediscovered in 2023 after disappearing for over 50 years. With the species rediscovered, we are recommencing surveys and habitat assessments throughout the western basalt plains of Victoria, and closely monitoring the rediscovered population.

We work hard to make sure that dragons aren’t just a fantasy.
